David is presently Head of the Department of Architecture and the Built Environment and Co-Director to the Centre for Floods Communities and Resilience at the University of the West of England, Bristol. He is Chair of the Council of Heads of the Built Environment (CHOBE) in the UK, a member of the CIOB Educational Committee and a member of the RICS UK Education Standards Board.
Areas of research specialism include a number of construction management themes including international benchmarking; construction productivity; contractor performance; and client satisfaction issues. More recently his research efforts have focused towards urban flood management issues including damage assessment, flood repair and flood resilience.
The products of his extensive research activities have been disseminated through: over 200 refereed academic journal / conference papers; text books, research seminars and workshops; articles and features in the construction press; and by the publication of numerous reports and working papers. He acts as a reviewer to thirty international refereed journals, several book publishers, the EPSRC, the ESRC and the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme. He sits on the technical committees of many international research conferences and has provided consultation to a range of organisations including the UK and Australian Governments, a number of leading insurance companies (including Axa, Lloyds TSB, Norwich Union, Royal Sun Alliance) and many construction companies. He is Editor of the International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning and a member of the editorial board for the CIOB Construction Annual Review; Disaster Prevention and Management and Structural Survey journals.
